“The Competition”

Hosted by Alton Mill Arts Centre, Alton, Ontario

“The COMPETITION” is a painting event or paint off taking place at the upcoming 2022 Spring Open House on Sunday, May 1st at the Alton Mill Arts Centre in Alton, Ontario.  The event runs from noon to 4pm. The hosts are looking for those brave and brilliant artists who wish to lay it all on the line, to create brilliance in a short period of time with the support of a live audience watching them place every stroke on canvas. Do you have that courage?  Then come aboard and register.  Only Alton Mill studio artists and Headwaters Arts member artists are invited to compete/participate in the event.

About the EVENT & HOW TO REGISTER

  •  There is NO charge to register! Food and drinks will be available throughout the day during this ticketed event open to all. Registered artists will receive one free drink ticket. Participating artists are not required to purchase a ticket.
  • Registered/participating artists will be given a theme for the competition upon arrival
  • Canvas, easels, water, drop clothes, paint (acrylic) are all provided for you. You need only bring your brushes
  • The event will take place at the Alton Mill Arts Centre in the Millrace and Turbine Room and HA’s  outdoor arts space, the tented roof over the historical Annex courtyard

How it works ~ It’s a Paint Off! with an audience!!

  • In round 1, there will be 10-12 artists (This will be based on interest to participate), each given the same theme to paint over the course of 30 minutes
  • The audience will move about the room during this time and artists will be placed randomly throughout the room on pre-set easels.
  • Round 1 will be voted on by the audience as well as a live judges panel and the 4 winners will move on to a final 2nd Round where no theme will be in place and artists again have 30 minutes to paint
  • The judges panel will consist of 3 established artists in the broader creative community
    • Music will be playing in the room throughout the event but you are more than welcome to wear headphones or ear plugs
    • Artists will be given the opportunity to say something about their piece (their choice to do so) before voting takes place
  • All works will be sold at the event for a set price (50% goes directly to the artist)
  • This set price is still to be determined, details to follow
  • The winner of the final round will receive a cash prize
  • Promotion and marketing of the Spring Open House event and participating artists prior and during the event, both locally and beyond will be a priority, with a goal to attract a large audience
